Wellens ecstatic with Swindon’s display in thrashing Morecambe

Swindon manager Richie Wellens was thrilled with his side as they thrashed Morecambe 4-0 to keep their play-off chances alive.
Goals from Theo Robinson, Kaiyne Woolery, Dion Conroy and Kyle Bennett saw Swindon ease to victory at the County Ground.
Wellens’ side remain seven points adrift of the play-off places.
He said: “Overall, it was a really positive day, we caused them a lot of problems from the very first minute.
“I actually enjoyed watching it because a lot of what we have been working on on the training ground, I was actually seeing. Today was a really good performance from one to 11.
“I’m giving my front four free license to roam, I want them to really excite us, I think they are a really good front four, I want them to be positive and really energetic.
“Today they came up with the goods and I am really pleased for them. It was a game we knew we had to win and we won it well in the end.”
Morecambe started the game well but fell behind in the 10th minute when Robinson headed into an empty net after Conroy’s initial effort was blocked.
Morecambe should have been level eight minutes later when Aaron Collins found himself one-on-one with Luke McCormick but the Swindon goalkeeper made an excellent save when Collins appeared certain to equalise.
Morecambe’s misery was compounded as Woolery doubled the hosts’ advantage three minutes before half-time with a low drive past goalkeeper Mark Halstead.
Conroy made it 3-0 with first professional goal in the 66th minute to settle the contest by slotting neatly into the far corner after cutting inside a defender.
Bennett completed the rout nine minutes from time with a long-range strike that took a cruel bounce before beating the helpless Halstead.
Morecambe manager Jim Bentley said: “We did not defend well enough.
“The centre-half for the third goal was doing a triple pirouette, twisting and turning, we are just lying down and he puts it in the top corner.
“It was too easy today. We came up against a good side, we did our homework on them, they are expansive and take chances.”
Bentley admitted Collins’ miss was a big turning point in the game.
He added: “We said we would hit them on the counter attack. They got on top possession wise but we had the best chance.
“Aaron Collins goes clear through and all he has to do is slip it to Aaron Wildig. We had opportunities.”
