Maidstone in trouble as Ebbsfleet’s play-off challenge continues

Ebbsfleet moved within three points of the play-off places with a 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Maidstone.
Gozie Ugwu had already gone close when he opened the scoring in the 20th minute, the striker sweeping home at the end of a flowing counter-attack.
Maidstone responded and a fierce drive from Blair Turgott was pushed over by Nathan Ashmore before the break.
The Fleet goalkeeper had to be alert early in the second half to keep out a volley from Justin Amaluzor and Josh Taylor saw a goal-bound effort blocked as the home side pushed for a leveller.
Michael Cheek was inches away from turning in a second goal for Ebbsfleet in the 76th minute, while at the other end substitute Jake Embery’s shot from a tight angle was pushed away by Ashmore.
Ebbsfleet brought on striker Danny Kedwell for his 200th appearance for the club but it was Cheek who wrapped up the points with a close-range finish in stoppage time.
