Mansfield dropped out of the top three promotion places after two quickfire goals by sub Callum Ainley saw them crash to a 2-1 home defeat by mid-table Crewe.
Ainley broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, eight minutes after coming on, before adding a second in the 84th minute.
Home skipper Krystian Pearce pulled one back in added time, but it came too late to save the Stags.
A tight first half saw few chances though CJ Hamilton and Matt Preston had efforts cleared off the line by Eddie Nolan and Paul Green.
Jordan Bowery forced the only save of the half from Chris Porter’s clever flick in the 29th minute.
Ainley finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute as he turned well eight yards out and made space to drill low under Smith.
Ainley then made sure of the points as Tommy Lowery took advantage of a slip by home skipper Pearce and raced forward to set up Ainley for a low finish inside the far post from the right.
In the second added minute, Pearce forced the ball over the line from close range from a scramble after a corner.
