Askey gets off the mark with first win as Vale boss

Ricky Miller’s second-half double saw John Askey pick up his first win as Port Vale manager with a 2-1 victory over Sky Bet League Two promotion hopefuls Mansfield Town.
Mansfield should have opened the scoring in the 18th minute when they were awarded a penalty by referee Darren Bond after CJ Hamilton was fouled by Leon Legge but Vale goalkeeper Scott Brown turned aside Nicky Ajose’s spot-kick.
Five minutes after the interval Vale grabbed the lead when Miller burst through for a one-on-one, rounding Stags goalkeeper Jordan Smith before slotting left-footed into an empty net.
Miller netted his second goal – and sixth of the season – two minutes later, smashing the ball home past Smith from inside the six-yard box after the visiting defence failed to clear.
David Flitcroft’s Stags pulled one back on the hour when Ajose headed in Otis Khan’s cross from the right, setting up a nervy finish.
Askey’s side managed to hang for the win, easing their relegation worries, while denting Mansfield’s hopes of automatic promotion.
