LEICESTER have scrapped plans for an interim boss - and will move to appoint Brendan Rodgers THIS SEASON.

The Celtic boss is the club’s No1 target and King Power chiefs also like Rafa Benitez.

They are ready to move immediately to start the process of getting the club back on track following Claude Puel’s sacking.

Rodgers will cost around £6.5million to land from the Scottish Premiership leaders mid-season and with a treble within sight.

The Foxes are expected to make an approach in the next few days over a compensation package.

Benitez has four months left on his Newcastle contract and will be free to move at the end of the campaign if a deal cannot be struck.

Getting Puel’s successor in position at the King Power Stadium is now the route Foxes chairman Aiyawatt "Top" Srivaddhanaprabha wants to take.

First-Team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler will take charge for tonight’s clash against Brighton - but the move for a new man will step up later this week.

Meanwhile, Puel released a statement on Monday describing his honour at managing the Foxes.

He said: “I would like to thank everyone that I worked with at Leicester City Football Club. It was a privilege to work with the players, the staff and the management.

"I would also like to thank the fans for their fantastic support as well as their understanding as the team developed.

"I really appreciate the willingness to learn and work ethic of all of the players and I have no doubt that they will all have bright futures.

"It was my honour to work for the late and much loved Khun Vichai, who gave me the fantastic opportunity to manage his club and share some great moments with him.

"My mission at Leicester City Football Club ends here but I will continue to follow the performances of the team and wish the club all the best for the future."
