Billy Mckay hat-trick keeps Ross County on course for promotion

Billy Mckay took his season’s tally to 20 with a hat-trick as Ross County maintained their charge for promotion from the Ladbrokes Championship with a 3-2 win over Ayr United.
County went ahead after 35 minutes when a ball into the box from Jamie Lindsay caused hesitation in the Ayr defence and Billy Mckay took advantage to coolly take the ball down and rifle home.
Josh Mullin hit the crossbar for the hosts before the Honest Men drew level through Lawrence Shankland.
Shankland started the move himself when he played the ball to Liam Smith and then was in the right place in the box to finish.
Mckay grabbed his second 20 minutes from time when he latched onto a ball from Lindsay and fired into the top corner from the edge of the box but the lead lasted just three minutes before Ayr countered quickly and Andy Murdock headed home Michael Moffat’s cross.
But two minutes later Mckay completed his second hat-trick of the season, finishing after Ross Doohan had saved an initial effort from Kenny Van Der Weg.
