Michael Flynn hails two-goal Jamille Matt after Newport win

Michael Flynn hailed two-goal Jamille Matt after his Newport side eerily exorcised cup demons to run out 4-1 winners at League Two bottom side Notts County.
The Exiles had their FA Cup dreams quashed by Premier League heavyweights Manchester City at the weekend but turned the scoreline on its head thanks to two goals from Matt and one apiece from Fraser Franks and Padraig Amond.
And while his forwards certainly shone, Flynn was keen to spare a word for everyone involved after what has been a hectic few days for the club.
“I’m very proud of them tonight, they were excellent,” he said.
“Jamille Matt’s cross for Padraig Amond’s goal was unbelievable wing-play.
“I thought he was unplayable tonight. He bullied their defenders.
“Podge’s (Amond) movement was excellent as well and Joss Labadie, Scot Bennett and Robbie Willmott were unbelievable in midfield – especially as two of them had bookings early on.
“But right through the team there were great performances – Joe Day made a brilliant save at 4-1 with 10 minutes to go and Fraser (Franks), Mickey (Demetriou), OB (Mark O’Brien) and Regan (Poole) were all solid – every single one of them.”
And despite the heady days of the FA Cup fifth round, Flynn certainly had not forgotten their woeful record away from Rodney Parade in the league.
“We’ve played well on the road and we haven’t got the results we’ve deserved. We’ve lost seven (in a row) but we should have got something out of at least five of them,” he continued.
“Tonight, it was excellent from start to finish, and that’s what’s needed because you might not always get that amount of chances.”
Franks opened the scoring for the visitors just nine minutes into the contest, before the hosts equalised immediately through Kane Hemmings.
But Matt’s quickfire double, followed by Amond’s 20th of the season just after the break, put paid to the hosts’ three game unbeaten run and left them mired at the bottom of the table, a fact that left Magpies boss Neal Ardley at his wits’ end.
“We are not invincible like everybody thinks we are after a run of three games,” he said.
“I knew this would be the toughest game of the season, we didn’t deliver and that’s the first time this group have done that. The players are fuming with themselves.
“I knew it would be tough because they are good at what they do, and we couldn’t cope with it defensively.
“We were a bit at sixes and sevens, and when you are chasing the game there is anxiety.
“The third and fourth goals kill you, but it’s one of them you have to draw a line under it and move on.”
