AT the 2010 World Cup, Spain lost their opening game of the tournament to Switzerland.

Iker Casillas made an error for Gelson Fernandes to score the winner - but it was Sara Carbonero who got the blame.

It was claimed that Casillas had been distracted by his new girlfriend, who was standing behind his goal as a pitchside reporter.

The story spread around the world, although Casillas and Sara - as well as the Spanish press - described the story as nonsense.

Sara again made worldwide news later on in the tournament.

After Spain won the World Cup in South Africa, she interviewed Casillas.

And at the end of the interview he planted a big kiss on her lips, leaving the brunette beauty speechless.

Since then the Spanish power couple have rarely been out of the headlines, even after the former Spain and Real Madrid captain left the Bernabeu for Porto.

Sara had been a fixture on Spanish radio and TV since graduating from the University of Madrid in the early 2000s.

After joining Marca as an intern and taken on full time six months later, Sara had worked at Cadena Ser and La Sexta before becoming a household name as a reporter for Telecinco.

It was in that role she met Casillas.

The couple started dating in 2009 - the same year she was named 'sexiest reporter in the world' by FHM America.

Sara, now 34, continued working after their family moved to Portugal in 2015, before retiring at the end of 2017 to concentrate on family life.

Despite being off the TV and living in a different country, Sara is still a major draw for Spanish glossy magazines.

Described as an Instagram 'influencer', where she has more than two million followers, nearly all of her posts are dissected by magazines and website for style hints and tips.

She has also been used as a model for L'Oreal and other big brands, while she is paid to advertise products on her social media accounts.

Sara, also called an 'It Girl', is said to earn around €1million annually from her posts.

However, despite her lucrative contract as a model, there have been rumours in the Spanish media that she wants to make a comeback.

Sara and Casillas also had a scare at the end of last year, when she revealed that she'd had to have a tumour removed.

Luckily, it turned out to be benign.
