Cheltenham produce late fightback to deny Forest Green

Cheltenham hit back from 2-0 down to rescue a 2-2 draw in the Gloucestershire derby against promotion-chasing Forest Green.

Goals from Tahvon Campbell and George Williams put Rovers firmly in command after a goalless first half, but Luke Varney and Conor Thomas both found the net as it finished all-square.

Campbell had the best chance of the first half after a pass from Lloyd James in the 17th minute, but Scott Flinders blocked well.

Forest Green edged the first half, yet Cheltenham were close to taking the lead in the 25th minute when Chris Hussey’s low ball in was parried by James Montgomery to Alex Addai, whose effort hit James.

Addai then teed up Tyrone Barnett for a clear chance in the 51st minute but he shot wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute when Reece Brown played in Campbell, who kept his cool to beat Flinders.

Williams made it 2-0 six minutes later after Campbell’s through ball, scoring his fourth goal in two games, but substitute Varney pulled one back for Cheltenham after a mistake from Nathan McGinley in the 78th minute.

Thomas then tapped in from close range after a fumble by Montgomery to rescue a point for the home side.
