Madden’s double keeps Highbury a fortress for Fleetwood

Fleetwood Town’s Highbury base remains a fortress as they made it seven games unbeaten at home in the league thanks to a 2-0 win over promotion-chasing Doncaster.

Town took the lead against the run of play in the 11th minute as they converted their first chance of the game.

Nathan Sheron whipped in a left-footed cross from the right that outfoxed the Doncaster defence with Paddy Madden nodding home his 11th goal of the season.

Rovers continued to ask questions of Town and had the ball in the net as the half progressed, but it was disallowed.

Ex-Fleetwood man Danny Andrew’s free-kick crashed into the left post and out to Andy Butler. But the Rovers captain was ruled to have been offside when he converted the rebound with the goal chalked off.

Fleetwood made it 2-0 three minutes after half-time as Ched Evans and Ashley Hunter found themselves two-on-one with keeper Ian Lawlor.

Evans unselfishly rolled the ball backwards to Hunter who managed to divert the ball home under pressure from the recovering Doncaster defence.

Hunter nearly made it three as the mist descended at Highbury, but his effort rolled just past the right post.

But Madden did make it three late on as he netted in added time.
