Late Rhys Bennett goal earns Peterborough a draw at Shrewsbury

Peterborough struck a late equaliser to earn a point from a 2-2 draw at Shrewsbury.

The hosts twice led thanks to goals from Greg Docherty and Fejiri Okenabirhie, but high-flying Posh hit back through Matt Godden and Rhys Bennett’s stoppage-time effort.

Sam Ricketts could not have asked for a better start to his first home league game as Shrewsbury manager, with his team taking a second-minute lead.

Docherty, on loan from Rangers, drilled a low shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner of the net.

But Peterborough were soon level in the 12th minute when Marcus Maddison’s inviting low cross from the right was instinctively turned in by Godden.

Aaron Amadi-Holloway flicked a header narrowly wide for Shrewsbury before Posh keeper Aaron Chapman pushed away Josh Laurent’s drive.

Colin Daniel fired just wide from distance early in the second half for the visitors before Shrewsbury regained the lead in the 59th minute when Okenabirhie rounded keeper Chapman to score his 10th goal of the season from a tight angle.

Godden missed a chance to equalise when he hit the bar from close range but Posh grabbed a late leveller when defender Bennett turned the ball home after Shrewsbury were unable to clear a corner.
