Oldham boss Frankie Bunn hoping for consistency after Crewe win

Oldham boss Frankie Bunn hopes his side can maintain a level of consistency after the improving Latics won 2-0 at Crewe thanks to superb strikes from veterans Peter Clarke and Chris O’Grady.

Bunn’s side showed greater nous in rain and wind-lashed conditions and took a firm grip on the game while restricting the Railwaymen to the occasional opening.

When the Cheshire side did threaten, on-loan goalkeeper Daniel Iversen was there to thwart them.

The win extended Oldham’s unbeaten run to five League Two games and seven in all competitions.

Bunn said: “It was probably the best I’ve seen us play in the first half in what were difficult conditions. We started on the front foot and that set the tempo for the game.

“We were full of running and had good quality from our goalkeeper all the way through. The pitch was heavy and there was water lying on top of that, but the way the lads adapted to the surface was terrific.

“There is more to come, but I would like to see consistency now. We’ve set a standard over the last month or so when we’ve been very good.

“We’ve had a few draws, but we’re unbeaten in seven and we just need to be consistent throughout the season.

“We put in a lot of hard work. The front four were so energetic and were full of running. It set a precedent for the rest of team and we pressed high and kept Crewe at bay.”

It was not a memorable day for Dave Artell who was taking charge of his 100th game as Crewe boss.

He admitted: “It was inept from start to finish. Not one player could say that they got the better of their opposite number.

“When you have that many players off their game then you are not going to win a game of football.

“Yes it was a great strike for their first goal and you can hold your hand up to the finish, but it was too easy still the way he got in.

“The second was as soft as hell and the fans will question whether we work on throw-ins.

“We lost 3-0 at Crawley recently and I thought we were terrific. But we got what we deserved today.”
