Hines likely to keep his place as Chesterfield seek break from run of draws

Chesterfield boss Martin Allen will bid to boost the Spireites’ season and create a welcome distraction from their bizarre run of form in the Vanarama National League when they host Grimsby in the FA Cup second round.

Allen’s side are on their worst ever winless league run of 19 games, but nine straight league draws – matching the record for the top five divisions in English football – have also contributed to a run of 12 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Zavon Hines looks set to keep his place in the side after his last-minute penalty earned a 1-1 draw with Bromley on Tuesday after he replaced Lee Shaw up front.

Allen could stick with the front three he fielded against Bromley, with Tom Denton and Jordan Hallam also up front.

Grimsby will be looking to reach the third round for only the second time since 2004.

Mariners boss Michael Jolley could stick with the side which beat Tranmere 5-2 on Tuesday, with Harry Clifton impressing and scoring his first Sky Bet League Two goal for the club.

Danny Collins will be available for Grimsby after he missed the club’s biggest win since 2016 following his dismissal four minutes from time against Northampton.

Reece Hall-Johnson and Akin Famewo are expected to be out until Christmas while Elliott Whitehouse (knee) is also sidelined.
