Steve Chettle: Conceding late goals is the story of our season

Steve Chettle lamented another late goal which robbed Notts County of a priceless victory as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Carlisle.

The Magpies looked on course for a much-needed win when Elliot Hewitt reacted quickest to convert after Noor Husin saw his effort saved just after the hour mark.

But Jerry Yates headed home Liam McCarron’s cross six minutes from time to deny Chettle three points in his final game as caretaker manager before Neal Ardley takes charge at Meadow Lane following Harry Kewell’s sacking.

And Chettle, while largely praising the spirited efforts of his players, acknowledged that a lapse of concentration at the back has cost them dear once again.

“I thought we created plenty of chances and it was a positive display,” he said. “We changed it at the break and got players higher up the pitch and we freed Elliott Hewitt up.

“We took the game to them before we went ahead. It is a pleasing point but we would have preferred the win.

“We need to look at late goals and stop conceding them. The players need to concentrate and play the full 90 minutes.

“Conceding late goals is the story of our season. Concentration is one of the main words we use, we need to do work on crosses, we’ve got some work to do with the group.

“We’ve got to go better and get more points to get us out of where we are.”

The Cumbrians enjoyed the lion’s share of the first half, but Jamie Devitt’s long-range free-kick fizzing over the crossbar was the closest they came.

They nearly paid the full price for their lack of firepower, but Yates’ header ensured the spoils were shared.

Carlisle assistant manager Tommy Wright felt that while the visitors bouncing back from the verge of defeat was pleasing, they should have taken advantage of their early pressure.

“We passed the ball well and could have had better end product, but it’s a game we should have won,” he said.

“Possession doesn’t win you games, you have to put the ball in the back of the net. The good thing is we went behind and came back.

“We kept going and kept moving the ball quickly. We had chances to win it at the end.

“We had decent chances. I felt if we had got the first goal we would have gone on to win this game.

“Football has got a habit of biting you if you don’t go ahead when you are on top and are not taking your chances. I thought we responded well.”
