Charlton boss Lee Bowyer beaming after hard-fought win

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer was “over the moon” with his side’s 2-1 victory at Burton.

Skipper Jason Pearce thumped home an 88th-minute header from a corner after the two sides had traded first-half penalties from Lucas Akins and Karlan Grant.

“These Tuesday night games are the ones that can get you promoted,” said the Addicks boss.

“Come the end of the season you have to dig deep. The lads are tired from Saturday and I asked them to just give me 100% and fight and dig in for one another and they gave a real dogged team performance to get the three points.”

Bowyer acknowledged that his side were fortunate to come away with the win but after previous performances had not resulted in deserved victories, he was grateful to head back to South London with the points.

“Did we deserve the three points? No, but there have been a lot of games this season where we deserved the points and came away with nothing, so I’m going to take this one and run,” he added.

Pearce was given credit by his manager for the winner but acknowledged it took a team performance to grind out the result that sees Charlton remain in sixth place.

“He’s a warrior isn’t he? He’s a leader and that is why he is our captain but it was a real team performance and they all put a shift in,” Bowyer said.

“I’ve told the players that it’s the best three points we’ve won this season. It’s one of those that you don’t deserve but you dig deep to get that win. I am over the moon.”

For Nigel Clough it was back-to-back league defeats and a bitter one for his Burton side to swallow after dominating large parts of the game.

“We only have ourselves to blame,” he lamented.

“Being so much on top in the first half in particular and giving the goal away that we did at 1-0 up, ultimately that has cost us the game.

“Unfortunately for us that keeps on happening and that is now four 2-1 defeats here in the league.

“They are almost carbon copies of each other where we’ve played well for the vast majority of the game, having chances, corners and everything but then we’ve conceded two goals and it’s the manner of how we’ve conceded. It is that first one that is the killer.

“It is nice to see a penalty go in and see it go in the bottom corner and from there we are looking to go and get another goal and take a two or three-nil lead into half-time because Charlton have hardly been near us.”
