Goals in each half from Greg Docherty and Fejiri Okenabirhie sealed a 2-0 win for Shrewsbury against Plymouth.
A third win in four Sky Bet League One games moved the Shrews seven points clear of the bottom four, with the visitors five points from safety after a third defeat in four.
Argyle carried an early threat with top scorer Freddie Ladapo’s effort deflected into the side netting.
Shrewsbury responded brightly with Docherty’s low drive kept out at his near post by goalkeeper Matt Macey before he dealt with Luke Waterfall’s long-range shot.
Ladapo then went even closer for Argyle when his shot struck the outside of the far post before Shrewsbury broke the deadlock in the 35th minute.
Docherty, on loan from Rangers, cut inside from the left and arrowed a low drive from 20 yards to the bottom corner of the net.
Okenabirhie doubled the lead in the 68th minute as he grabbed a fifth goal in four games with a composed finish after breaking into the box.
Docherty almost stretched the home side’s advantage when his powerful shot was tipped over the bar by Macey.
