Southend see off 10-man Scunthorpe

Southend ended a run of four successive League One defeats with a 2-0 victory against 10-man Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall.

Goals from Timothee Dieng and Sam Mantom, either side of James Perch’s dismissal, secured a return to winning ways for the hosts.

The Shrimpers opened the scoring after just eight minutes when Harry Bunn’s left-wing cross was met by Dieng, who netted with a powerful header from 10 yards.

Southend stayed on top with Stephen McLaughlin having two curling efforts impressively tipped wide of the left post by Scunthorpe goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

However, the Iron were reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute when Perch was shown a second yellow card by referee Trevor Kettle following a foul on Stephen McLaughlin.

Despite the defender’s dismissal, Scunthorpe still looked a threat at the start of the second half with Cameron Burgess having a header tipped over by Southend goalkeeper Mark Oxley, who then also pushed away a free-kick from Josh Morris.

But the Shrimpers made sure of the win in the 80th minute with Mantom netting with a low shot against his former side.

The closest Scunthorpe came to netting a consolation was when Lee Novak hit the crossbar in the 81st minute.
