Gillingham come back from 2-0 down to beat Hartlepool after extra time in FA Cup

Gillingham came from two goals down at National League Hartlepool to win 4-3 after extra time and ensure their progression to the second round of the FA Cup.
The fifth-tier outfit threatened an upset when they took a 2-0 half-time lead through Carl Magnay and Paddy McLaughlin, but Max Ehmer pulled one back before Tom Eaves’ penalty deep into added time forced extra time.
Luke O’Neill and substitute Elliott List both scored in the extra 30 minutes for the League One side and they held on after Tyrone O’Neill pulled one back to secure a trip to Slough in the next round.
As had been the case in the first game between these sides – a 0-0 draw at Priestfield – Pools weathered an early storm and came on strong thereafter.
And it was from an unlikely source they edged in front in the 21st minute.
A deep cross from Liam Noble found central defender Magnay, restored to the side after suspension, and he nodded in after visiting goalkeeper Tomas Holy was caught flapping.
It was 2-0 11 minutes later when McLaughlin popped up after another mistake by Holy to turn home with his left foot.
The deficit was halved five minutes after the break when Ehmer popped up at the back post to turn in a right-wing cross from Darren Oldaker.
With the four minutes of added time up, goalscorer Magnay was adjudged to have handled in the area and Eaves stepped up to take the game into extra time.
Gills edged in front after 12 minutes when Luke O’Neill curled home expertly before List added a fourth two minutes after the change of ends.
Another O’Neill – Hartlepool’s Middlesbrough loanee Tyrone – pulled one back six minutes from time but Gills clung on to progress.
