Doncaster boss McCann hails four-goal hero May

Grant McCann lavished praise on four-goal hero Alfie May as Doncaster eased into the second round of the FA Cup with a 7-0 win over Chorley.

May secured his first hat trick in professional football in the first half before adding a fourth late on in a replay Doncaster thoroughly dominated.

“Alfie was brilliant,” McCann said. “He’s got some record here Alfie. I saw before the game he’d made 35 starts and got 14 goals.

“He’s added four to that tonight so he’s well over one in two.

“I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves.”

McCann was delighted with the performance of his team in what he described as a tough tie overall against National League North opposition.

Matty Blair, Herbie Kane and John Marquis also found the net for Doncaster, who had Tom Anderson sent off for two bookable offences.

“They were outstanding, every single one of them put in a real professional job,” McCann said.

“Without exaggeration it probably could have been 20 with the chances we created.

“But we’ll take seven, we’re into the next round. A good night’s work.

“I thought we were outstanding in the first half, some of the play was excellent.

“It’s difficult in these games. People think it’s easy when you get a non-league side but Chorley are flying high.

“They’re confident. It was always going to be tough going there.

“We had to come back here, we had to be controlled and decisive in our play and we were.”

Chorley manager Jamie Vermiglio says he is determined for his side to move on quickly from the defeat and concentrate on winning promotion to the National League.

Bitterly disappointed with the scoreline, primary school headteacher Vermiglio was nevertheless proud of his side’s run in the FA Cup.

“I think we’ll probably put this one to bed quite quickly, just as you do with some other results that go for or against you,” Vermiglio said.

“We’ll just say well done everyone, we’ve had a great run and we should have a lot of pride in what we’ve done but let’s just move on to the main aim which is promotion.”

“I will take a lot from the cup run and the experience.

“I think I will learn a lot because we were galvanised in that first game and we really wanted to push on high up the pitch.

“We came here with the same mentality and thought we could rattle them and get right in their faces.

“But when that first goal goes in you need a bit of a change of gameplan.

“It never really happened for us. They broke really quickly, they’ve got a lot of pace in the side.

“Doncaster were excellent.”
