Connor Murray announces himself in style to deny Ayr

Connor Murray struck with his first touch as Queen of the South recorded a 1-1 draw with Scottish Championship leaders Ayr at Somerset Park.

Murray had just replaced David Norman when he was on hand to tap home his first goal of the season after Callum Fordyce had headed the ball across the box nine minutes from time.

Michael Rose had headed Ayr in front in the 75th minute from Alan Forrest’s corner but Murray’s leveller saw the Honest Men’s 100 per cent home record come to an end, although they did extend their lead at the top to four points.

Ayr striker Lawrence Shankland, with nine goals in as many games and 21 for the season, had three opportunities in the first half, first heading wide before two other efforts were saved by Queens keeper Alan Martin.

At the other end, 25-goal Doonhamers forward Stephen Dobbie – who scored four times in a 5-0 home win when these sides met in September – struck the post with a lovely left-foot volley six minutes before the break.
