Newport booked their place in the second round of the FA Cup with a goal either side of half-time to defeat Metropolitan Police 2-0 at Imber Court.
Goals from Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt dashed the dreams of the non-league side, who were reduced to 10 men just before the final whistle.
The visitors took a while to settle before hitting the post midway through the first half when Amond was sent clean through.
Having seen a header from a free-kick disallowed for offside, the forward glanced Newport ahead from a corner after 41 minutes as his header sneaked under keeper Thomas Williams.
The hosts almost responded instantly just before half-time, but Max Blackmore saw his point-blank header saved by Joe Day to deny Met Police an equaliser.
And, just three minutes into the second-half, Tyreeq Bakinson’s shot was pushed into the path of Matt who had an easy tap-in to double Newport’s advantage.
Met Police were limited to half-chances as they searched for a way back into the contest before Newport almost added to their lead – but Antoine Semenyo had a goal chalked off for offside.
Any chances the hosts might have had were ended on 87 minutes when the Met Police were reduced to 10 men after Louis Birch was sent off for picking up a second yellow card.
