Sutton frustrated by Slough in stalemate

Sutton were left frustrated by a resolute and organised Slough at Gander Green Lane as they were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw.

Visitors Slough came into the game as underdogs but were aiming to make it into the second round of the FA Cup for only the eighth time in their history.

They gave the home side a stern test and were unfortunate not to beat a Sutton side who have only lost three times this season.

Slough had to be at their best but matched Sutton in terms of physicality as both teams showed they were capable of good football at times and created numerous chances but failed to find breakthrough.

Slough top scorer James Dobson caused problems for the Sutton defence all afternoon but it was his captain who came closest to scoring.

In the 74th minute, Mark Nisbet’s volley seemed destined for the net only to be headed off the line by Sutton skipper Jamie Collins.

The resulting ball hung in the air and with Matty Stevens ready to fire the Rebels ahead, he appeared to be dragged down, but the referee waved away Slough claims and a goal remained elusive.

The game at times was end-to-end, with Sutton also creating several goalscoring chances. A combination of lacklustre finishing and a solid display from Jack Turner in the Slough goal ensured the game finished goalless.

Sutton’s best chance came with minutes remaining. Makeshift striker Charlie Clough turned and found his way into the box, before driving a low shot which was well saved by the Slough goalkeeper.
