Barlaser puts Accrington in the second round

On-loan midfielder Daniel Barlaser hit the winning goal as Accrington knocked League Two Colchester out of the FA Cup 1-0.
The U’s have not made it into the second round since 2015 but were unlucky at the Wham Stadium after forcing the early pressure and losing two players to injury.
They lost both Tom Eastman and Rene Gilmartin in the opening 30 minutes and could not take their chances in front of goal.
Harry Pell’s curling effort was pushed out by Connor Ripley before the Stanley goalkeeper kept out a powerful Sammie Szmodics strike.
Ripley also denied Frank Nouble who raced clean through from midfield.
However League One Stanley grew into the game and one of substitute keeper Barnes’ first actions was to pick the ball out of the back of the net after Barlaser, on loan from Newcastle, hit a shot that looped up off Pell and into the bottom corner on 34 minutes.
The hosts looked for a second with Sean McConville not far off with his 30-yard strike and Jordan Clark kept out by Barnes.
Barnes also superbly held onto a Ben Richards-Everton point-blank header in the final 10 minutes.
Colchester, third in in the fourth tier, remained a threat with Szmodics close in injury-time but they could not find the equaliser.
