Ainsworth blasts ‘average’ Wycombe after defeat at Walsall

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth insisted it had been a good week for the Chairboys despite criticising defensive mistakes that led to a 3-2 defeat at Walsall.

Wanderers had registered back-to-back home wins but their poor away record – six points from a possible 24 on the road now – continued at the Banks’s Stadium.

It was a chaotic finish despite the hosts holding a two-goal lead going into the final 10 minutes, with Andy Cook and Isaiah Osbourne both on target.

Saddlers defender Luke Leahy put into his own net to spark a comeback from the visitors, before Dominic Gape did the same at the other end..

Wycombe pulled another one back in stoppage time when Alex Samuel slotted in the rebound after Walsall keeper Liam Roberts saved Scott Kashket’s penalty, but despite there being a couple of minutes still to play they were unable to draw level.

Ainsworth said: “When you score two goals away from home you feel you should get something out of the game but we defended poorly at times and you can’t do that at this level.

“A lot of us weren’t at the races today if I’m honest. Okay it was average but average isn’t good enough in League One.

“You’ve got to make sure you are above average every week and some of Walsall’s players played better than their opposite numbers today and that was the story of the game.

“We can’t ship goals like that and think we are going to get something out of games. We need to make sure that these mistakes are eradicated.

“But we’ve had a really good spell and the big picture is six points out of nine in a week. That’s fantastic and if we can keep that ratio going, then we will have no problems.”

Walsall’s first home league win since August lifted them to ninth and assistant boss Andy Davies said: “I think for us the most important thing today was getting the result.

“It is certainly pleasing to score three goals but if you win 1-0 it’s still three points.

“It’s nice to get goals because that’s what you want to do, you want to entertain the supporters but the most important thing for us, whether it was 1-0 or 3-2, it was getting the three points.

“And we’ve got that on the back of two away defeats. Today is massive for us to get the victory and start a run of five home games and hopefully carry that on now.

“You are always disappointed with goals you concede, there’s things you can work on and we always look back on every game.

“It was massive on the back of the last two results, to stay in the pack there and get the three points was huge for us today.”
