Neil Aspin hails Port Vale after they dig deep to beat Bury

Port Vale boss Neil Aspin saluted his players’ hard work and commitment after they dug in to beat Bury 1-0 at Vale Park.

Former Bury striker Tom Pope provided the decisive goal in the second half, drilling home clinically past Joe Murphy.

Vale have now secured three League Two clean sheets since being hammered 6-2 by Lincoln a fortnight ago.

Aspin said: “Obviously the Lincoln game was a real low point for us. It was a low point for me personally and one which took a lot out of us.

“We spoke about lots of things after that game, though, and I said to some of the lads that they can either keep going or throw the towel in.

“We have kept going and the response since that game has been terrific. We played against a really good Bury side today so I’m delighted.

“I’ve seen Bury play this season and I’ve spoken to other managers about them, and they are dangerous.

“They’re a team full of good players, so for us to beat them gives everyone here a confidence boost.

“I can’t fault the players’ commitment or endeavour after that. We were strong and we held on for a hard-earned three points. The player deserve all the plaudits after that.”

Bury boss Ryan Lowe was clearly frustrated as his side did not take any of their numerous opportunities as their six-match unbeaten league run came shuddering to a halt.

Lowe said: “That’s a game we should never have lost.

“Of course I’m disappointed. The players have got to have that stronger mentality and ruthlessness you need to win games at this level.

“We needed to see the game out when we were on top in the first half.

“In the end a sloppy goal has cost us dearly. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’re nearly a good team, but we’re not there yet.

“I contemplated making a few changes before the game, but I only made the one. The players that did play, though, didn’t stick to what they’re good at.

“We ought to have been two up by half-time. Nicky Maynard, Danny Mayor, they both missed great chances.

“Maybe Port Vale just had that stronger mentality today, though.

“It’s a disappointing defeat, but it’s gone now and we have to try and come back stronger next week.”
