Robins delighted with ‘amazing’ Coventry performance against Doncaster

Coventry City boss Mark Robins was delighted for his side after they secured a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

First-half goals from Jordy Hiwula and Luke Thomas were enough to seal the Sky Blues with their fifth consecutive league win, and Robins couldn’t praise his team enough.

“I thought it was a good game and I thought we played some good stuff. We kept them at bay and we had some good chances.

“We took the lead through another set play and the second one is a brilliant strike from Luke Thomas, which is nothing short of what he deserves with his work rate since he’s been here.

“I’m delighted for everybody really because that was a huge shift at the end of a really tough week.

“It was an amazing performance, amazing work rate. There was a desire to win. When you’re in front like that, you know the opposition is going to come at you, especially when you’re tired it gives the opposition a lift.

“We conceded a poor goal from our point of view, but I think that they probably deserved to score over the game because they created a lot of opportunities themselves in the second half.

“I’m delighted with the three points, delighted with the win and the application from everyone and it was just a great win.”

Doncaster manager Grant McCann was left to bemoan a poor first-half display as his side came away from the Ricoh Arena empty-handed.

Rovers’ second-half showing was a stark contrast to their opening 45 but, despite Joe Taylor reducing the deficit with 20 minutes to go, McCann’s side couldn’t muster an equaliser.

“I thought in the first-half we were poor,” said McCann, “I never hide away from what I think – we weren’t good enough, simple as that.

“We conceded two very sloppy goals – well it was a good goal the second one, but it was poor from us. The second half was almost like chalk and cheese. Wave after wave, we just couldn’t get that goal.

“When you start games like that and give teams a two-goal lead then it’s difficult. We came back against Gillingham, but it’s a tough place to come Coventry, especially with the run they’ve got. If you give them a 2-0 lead then you have a mountain to climb.

“Coventry worked harder than us, they pressed better than us. They didn’t play in terms of football ways any better, but they worked harder, they pressed more, and I take responsibility for that. I set the team-up, I pick the team and I told the boys that after the game.

“You know I’m never afraid from shirking the responsibility, but second half I thought we looked a lot better, we looked our normal selves. We possibly should have come away with something really in the end.”
