Arsenal news: Jack Wilshere reveals who was behind decision to leave Gunners
Arsenal let Jack Wilshere go in the summer

The Englishman left his boyhood club after 17 years to join West Ham in the summer for free.

His contract expired and the Gunners decided not to renew it, leaving Wilshere with no choice but to find pastures new.

The Stevenage-born star is renowned for his injury troubles and they seem to have followed him across London where he is currently crocked.

But his situation could have been very different had Wenger decided not to step down.

The legendary Frenchman was also another high-profile departure from the Emirates this summer after 22 years at the helm.

And Wilshere revealed had he stayed and not been replaced by Emery, then he may well still be at the club.

"If Arsene had stayed I would have stayed, because of the influence he had in my career and the trust he had in me,” he told The Islington Gazette.

"He gave me the armband and respected me a lot.

"So, I had pretty much agreed to stay. And then he left and that changed things.

"Arsene had said to me previously ‘stay and fight your way back into the team’

"Because I knew Arsene and knew he had trust in me, I knew I could do that and fight my way into the team.

"I knew that if I got myself fit and was training well that Arsene would put me in – and he did.

"But things were changing at the club and they were going into a new era and maybe it was time for me to leave as well.”

Wilshere has made four appearances for West Ham so far this season, making his debut in the 4-0 drubbing by Liverpool.
