Bowyer furious with his defence in loss to Coventry after ‘laughable’ late goals

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer revealed that he had some harsh words for his defence after they conceded a lead to lose 2-1 to Coventry at The Valley.

After Lyle Taylor’s penalty had given the Addicks the advantage before half-time, it looked likely that the hosts would go on to win until substitute Amadou Bakayoko scored with ten minutes remaining to level for Mark Robins’ men.

Bakayoko then added a second in injury-time to seal a superb comeback for the Sky Blues, which left Bowyer furious with the way his side threw away the points.

“The goals conceded was laughable stuff,” said the 41-year old.

“It’s basic defending – that’s what frustrates me.

“If someone shoots and it goes in from 30-yards then fair enough but I told our captain Jason Pearce that it wasn’t good enough.

“I called out the back-four in general; I said to them, I don’t care who you are, if you don’t do it right, it’s not good enough.”

Charlton had many chances to claim the victory and Bowyer was also frustrated with their inability to close out the match.

He said: “We can’t keep missing chances – it’s absolutely ridiculous.

“We dominated the first half today, battered Scunthorpe during the week but somehow conceded five and last week against Luton we were the better side.

“You add six points on to what we have, we’d be second or third. Instead we’re outside the play-off spots – I told them that.

“I can’t even think how or why it happens but the last three games we have conceded poor goals.

“Maybe we’re taking our foot off the pedal and thinking we’re too good and it’s too easy? It can’t continue.”

Meanwhile, Coventry boss Robins was absolutely delighted with the way his side came from behind to win at The Valley.

“To stick in the game and then take our chances the way we did was fantastic for us and they are three really, really good points,” said the 48-year-old.

“You could see everybody growing in confidence.

“In the first half, there was a clear difference between the two teams.

“But we get a lift with the pace and the strength of [Amadou] Bakayoko and [Jordy] Hiwula, who was brilliant when he came on, to seal us the win.”

Robins was keen to point out that while his side are on the right track, they need to keep focused in order to succeed in the league.

He said: “To win the game against Charlton is a big step forward, but by no means did we run away with it.

“Some would argue that it was a bit of a smash and grab, and I will take that because we stayed in the game.

“We have got to learn from it though as it is a mental game as well as a technical, tactical game but this is a great result.”
