Bradford inflict Payne on AFC Wimbledon

Jack Payne came off the bench to score a penalty and hand Bradford City their first win under David Hopkin as they overcame AFC Wimbledon 1-0.

Payne’s spot-kick in first-half added time was enough to separate the sides as the Dons were left to rue Joe Pigott missing a huge opportunity to give them the lead.

On the half-hour mark, Bradford keeper Richard O’Donnell let a long ball bounce over his head, but Pigott could only hit the side netting with the goal gaping.

The visitors took the lead just before the break – George Miller was tripped in the box by Wimbledon captain Deji Oshilaja, allowing substitute Payne, who had replaced the injured Jim O’Brien, to confidently dispatch his spot-kick and put Bradford ahead.

Wimbledon were denied an equaliser in the 57th minute when a header from Jake Jervis was cleared off the line.

Despite pressing for much of the second period, the Dons could not break through as Bradford held on to end their six-game winless streak.
