Clough bemoans missed chances after Burton held to draw

Burton manager Nigel Clough admitted his side missed a chance to pick up three points after being held to a 0-0 draw by Scunthorpe in League One.

Liam Boyce twice went close for Burton and Scunthorpe saw Matthew Lund’s effort chalked off for a foul.

Clough said: “The performance wasn’t too bad and we created enough situations out there and we were just waiting for somebody to come up with a little bit of quality in the final third.”

The brewers boss added in quotes carried on the club website: “It’s a good point, a clean sheet and it will be an even better one if we win on Tuesday night.”

Clough admitted Burton had been drained by playing in the Carabao Cup against Burnley.

He added: “The effects of Tuesday night against Burnley kicked in a bit. We had spells when we played well but not as sustained as it has been in recent weeks.

“We thought the goal was going to come as we were playing well enough and we created chances right to the end.”

Burton were denied a fourth straight home League One win as Scunthorpe extended Stuart McCall’s unbeaten start to six games.

The game took a while to come to life before Burton’s Scott Fraser fired a low shot wide and winger David Templeton saw a curling effort fro the edge of the area finger-tipped over the bar by Jak Alnwick.

Former Albion midfielder Lund fired in from a Josh Morris corner only to see his effort chalked off for a foul in the build-up.

The former Rochdale man forced Dimitar Evtimov into a good save as he clawed away a towering header from the top corner of the goal early in the second half.

Boyce twice forced an excellent save from Scunthorpe keeper Alnwick as Burton pushed for a winner. The Scunthorpe keeper saved his best for last when denying Fraser in added time.

MccCall told the Scunthorpe website: “Burton are on a run now, certainly here, so it’s a really good point. We defended well when we needed to do.

“I’m disappointed with how we were in possession for large parts of it – we were a little bit sloppy. We created three or four decent chances and I think Burton’s best opportunities came from us giving the ball away. Jak (Alnwick) made two really good saves at the end.

“I thought Cam (Burgess) and Charlie (Goode) did well against (Liam) Boyce all game, restricting his chances. He turned, used his power and it dipped but Jak made a good save.

“Overall, we know we can do better in certain areas but we were organised and restricted them to long range efforts for the large part. It’s a good point because I think they’ll certainly be top six come the end of the season.”
