Mission accomplished for Robinson’s Motherwell as Lennon’s Clyde ‘self-destruct’

Stephen Robinson said patience was key as his Motherwell side had to come from behind against Clyde to win 3-1 and take top spot in Betfred Cup Group G.
The Steelmen, who reached the final last season, had 19 shots throughout a frustrating 90 minutes that saw them fall behind to David Goodwillie’s wonderful opener for Ladbrokes League Two club Clyde.
In the end, second-half goals from Andrew Rose, Danny Johnson and Conor Sammon turned things around to send Motherwell into the last 16.
Robinson said: “We showed a lot of character in difficult conditions today, and it’s mission accomplished in the end.
“We had a lot of shots, admittedly not so many on target, but we were getting into decent chances.
“At half-time I told the players they had to be patient, to show their quality and break Clyde down.
“Fair play to to Clyde, they went ahead after a fantastic finish and made a tough game of it, but we got the result we deserved in the end.”
Clyde manager Danny Lennon said: “I’m disappointed. For long periods we matched Motherwell, then we self-destructed for their second goal.
“I thought we handled Motherwell’s physical presence very, very well and I’m proud of my players.”
