Boss Fernando Hierro was thrown in at the deep end when he was appointed to replace Julen Lopetegui just a day before thr tournament began.
And all did not go too well in the group stage, where draws with Portugal and Morocco sandwiched an unconvincing 1-0 win over Iran.
Despite the disappointing nature of the group stage performances, the 2010 champions did manage to win the group, and now face the hosts at Moscow’s imposing Luzhniki Stadium.
Hierro has no injury worries or suspensions so he has a full squad to choose from.
Rumours abounded that Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea could be dropped following some poor group stage performances, but Hierro has refuted that claim.
In midfield, the coach has many options - and Koke and Marco Asensio are among those who could come into the side following the 2-2 draw with Morocco.
Regardless, the team that starts in Moscow will be packed with world class players.
