Brechin beaten again as they finish season without a win

Brechin became the first Scottish team since Vale of Leven in 1892 to go a whole league season without a win as they ended the campaign with a 5-1 home defeat against Queen of the South.

Darren Dods’ side managed just four draws and finished 43 points adrift of third-bottom Falkirk and 70 points behind Ladbrokes Championship title winners St Mirren.

Two goals in eight minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half set the visitors on their way, and Stephen Dobbie went on to complete a hat-trick, with Lyndon Dykes bagging a brace.

Queen of the South were forced into a change midway through the first half after Scott Mercer was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Gary Fusco, who was booked.

The visitors continued to dominate after a lengthy stoppage, with Dom Thomas seeing a shot cleared off the line before Dobbie opened the scoring with a deflected shot from Jordan Marshall’s pass.

Queen of the South made it 2-0 deep into time added on at the end of the opening period as Dykes turned in a Dobbie pass from close range.

It was more of the same after the break, with Dobbie firing straight at the goalkeeper and Thomas having two shots saved before Dobbie added his second of the game.

Dykes made it 4-0 after 65 minutes with a neat chip over the keeper and Dobbie completed his hat-trick with a shot into the bottom corner.

Isaac Layne scored a late consolation for Brechin with a left-footed strike but their fate had long been sealed.
