Nick Daws impressed with Scunthorpe’s progress

Scunthorpe caretaker manager Nick Daws is pleased at how his side are adapting to win games.

Ryan Yates’ header secured a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Walsall which left United three points clear of seventh-placed Plymouth in the race for the League One play-offs.

Daws said: “That was a fabulous win and it was really hard-fought.

“I was concerned they (Walsall) would come and make it difficult for us and go quite direct.

“But eventually we found a way to win and that’s all that counts at this stage of the season.

“We know as a team we’re not going to be able to play and perform in the same way every week.

“If we win our next three games 1-0 and play that way, then I don’t think we will be too disappointed.
We’ve shown we can adapt to win a game in a certain way.

“I thought the centre-halves repelled everything that was thrown at us, so credit to them.

“After a difficult first half we found momentum.

“We could have perhaps got a few more bodies in the box but ultimately we achieved what we set out to achieve today, which was getting those three points.”

Scunthorpe dangerman Josh Morris came closest to breaking the deadlock, smacking a free-kick against a post in the first half.

The restart saw Walsall come out brightly, and Luke Leahy brought a speculative save from Matt Gilks before Funso Ojo came close for the hosts only to be denied by Liam Roberts.

When it looked as though the game was heading for a stalemate, Scunthorpe stole victory in the 76th minute.

Conor Townsend clipped the ball into the Walsall box and Yates was there to plant a header past Roberts.

Walsall are now just a point above the relegation places with only three games left.

Walsall boss Dean Keates said: “If I’m honest, I thought 0-0 would have been a fair result.

“But if you give someone the opportunity to get a free header in your box, then that’s what happens. You can’t switch off and let that happen.

“The ball came in the box and one of the players just switched off.

“We frustrated Scunthorpe and the crowd were getting edgy but as I say, you can’t switch off.

“The gameplan was working up until the goal. The players are working hard and that’s all we can ask for at the minute.

“They gave everything and if that cross is dealt with, then it finishes 0-0.”
