Christophe Galtier to spend next 24 hours considering his future at Lille

Lille boss Christophe Galtier was left considering his future after Sunday’s home defeat to Amiens left his club in deep relegation trouble.

Stiven Mendoza scored the only goal as Amiens eased their own fears in a Ligue 1 encounter played behind closed doors at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy following crowd trouble against Montpellier last month.

“There is disappointment, anger and a great deal of thinking to do in the next 24 hours to see if we can continue like this, because nothing is getting better,” Galtier said in tweets from the club.

“We are not at the right level mentally, not making enough effort against the other teams fighting for survival. It is not (because of) the absence of fans that we lost.

“I’m going to take 24 hours to take stock. I’ll need to reflect across the next seven games, if nothing improves…”

Galtier, a former Lille player, was appointed in December with the club in the bottom three following their poor first half of the season under Marcelo Bielsa.

Former St Etienne boss Galtier added: “The mistakes are one thing, the lack of effort is another.

“We have to find a way to bounce back. We cannot go on like this.”

Mendoza’s second-half goal was enough for Amiens, despite Lille twice hitting the frame of the goal in the closing stages.

Lille went agonisingly close to pulling level when Thiago Mendes hit a post eight minutes before the end and again in stoppage time.

Amiens boss Christophe Pelissier sounded a note of caution after the win, stating that his side’s 34-point haul was still not enough to guarantee safety.

But he was delighted with a second win in nine league matches.

“I liked the mood shown by my group,” Pelissier told the club’s official website. “Lille have good individual players, but they lack confidence.”
