The pair worked together between 1999-2001, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League.
But despite their incredible successes, the former England manager revealed they didn’t always get on.
And one particular moment stood long in his memory.
Speaking on BBC 5 Live, McClaren said: “I remember going to my first Leeds game with Sir Alex.
"We were going down Elland Road in the team bus and everyone was giving us abuse.

"The men and their kids were making gestures at us.
"Sir Alex said: ‘Look at that Steve, that is a disgrace, the gestures, it is ridiculous’.
"And I said: ‘Yeah, I used to be one of them… I’m a closet Leeds fan’.
"And he nearly threw me off the bus, he said: ‘Get off’.
"He nearly made me walk the last mile to the stadium.”
United will be looking to strengthen their second position in the Premier League when they host champions Chelsea tomorrow.
