On-loan Vyner makes the right impression on Adams to ensure Pilgrims’ progress continues

Plymouth manager Derek Adams hailed matchwinner Zak Vyner after his in-form side became only the second visiting team to secure three points at Shrewsbury this season.
The on-loan Bristol City defender struck just past the hour as Argyle hit back from a goal down to win 2-1 and extend their run to just one defeat in 12 League One games.
Adams said: “Zak has got pace in abundance, he’s a good user of the ball and he can also score from set plays. His main position is to defend and him and Sonny Bradley have set up a good partnership.”
The Scot was also impressed with the contribution of midfielder Jamie Ness, who cancelled out an early Carlton Morris goal when he pulled Plymouth level with a cool finish in the 27th minute.
The equaliser came shortly after Argyle’s Graham Carey had seen a penalty, awarded for a challenge on Antoni Sarcevic, excellently saved by goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.
“He makes a great forward run, it was a good flick on, and he’s a player that’s capable of doing that,” said Adams of Ness. “We need more goals from midfield but we’re getting that at this stage.”
Adams added: “We knew we would get chances in the game the way that Shrewsbury play. You’re always going to get opportunities and it was about getting the right opportunity at the right time – and we did that.
“We got the penalty kick and after missing the penalty we get a goal not long after that.”
Shrews manager Paul Hurst was disappointed his team, who remain second in the table, were unable to build on their flying start when Morris converted Max Lowe’s sixth-minute cross.
“We’re obviously disappointed,” admitted Hurst. “We were beaten by the better team, no qualms on that. I thought Plymouth did very well and reacted to obviously a good start for us – and we couldn’t build on that.
“We seemed to stop doing the things that we did early in the game and today we were second best.”
Hurst was frustrated by the manner of the visitors’ 62nd-minute winner as Vyner turned the ball home from close range after Shrewsbury failed to clear a Carey corner.
He said: “The second, you never like conceding set plays. It was a bit of a scruffy one and I’ll need to look back at that further.”
Hurst, whose side will play nine of their remaining 16 league games at home, added: “We haven’t lost games particularly anywhere, never mind here, this season at least.
“But it happens and, if anything, it’s maybe just a little reminder – and I mean for everybody, players, supporters, staff, whoever you want to say – that we’ve got these home games.
“But you have to win them. Today we couldn’t take advantage of that.”
