Will Grigg and Nick Powell secure victory for leaders Wigan

First-half goals from Will Grigg and Nick Powell gave Wigan Athletic a comfortable 2-0 victory over Gillingham to cements their position at the top of Sky Bet League One.

The Gills had arrived in the north west as the form team in the third tier, with six wins and two draws in their previous eight matches, but were no match for Paul Cook’s men.

Grigg grabbed the opening goal after 10 minutes, finishing off from close range after good work down the left by full-back Reece James.

And Powell – who stayed with Wigan this week despite strong interest from Premier League Brighton – doubled the lead on 34 minutes with a bullet header from Max Power’s corner.

It could have been three at the beginning of the second half, when Michael Jacobs cut in from the left only to fire against a post.

Gillingham thought they had pulled one back deep into stoppage-time, only for Elliott List to turn and see the flag up after heading past Christian Walton.
