It is dependent, of course, on Ozil, 29, seeing out his contract at Arsenal, then leaving on a free transfer.

United would happily pay the £8m fee, as it would represent a bargain by today’s inflated transfer spending standards.

Ozil cost Arsenal £42.4m when he moved from Real Madrid four years ago.

While he was at the Santiago Bernabeu, he played for United manager Jose Mourinho.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is fighting to keep Ozil and is adamant that, like Alexis Sanchez, he will not be sold in next month’s transfer window.

Forward Sanchez, 28, remains a target for Manchester United’s neighbours City.

Meanwhile, it is understood the Gunners are prepared to pay Ozil £4m to re-sign with them, before wages, if he agrees a new contract.
