Manchester City were in contact with Lionel Messi before he signed his new deal with Barcelona last month.
With his previous contract winding down, Messi was free to sign a pe-contract with a foreign team from January 1.
And making overtures during the confusion was City, particularly their owner Sheikh Mansour.
Marca reports City tabled a contract offer to Messi's camp worth €50m-a-year - and also included a €100m signing on fee.
However, after much delays, Messi chose to commit his future to Barca, signing terms to 2021 with a buyout clause of €700m.
It's understood Messi's new salary is €35m and Barca have also agreed to pay a €100m bonus in installments over the next four years.
