Southend move up to ninth after Oldham win

Southend United moved up to ninth in the League One table with a 2-0 win against OIdham Athletic at Roots Hall.
The Shrimpers opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Jason Demetriou fired home from the penalty spot after Cameron Dummigan had fouled Josh Wright.
The spot-kick ended a poor run of penalties for Southend, who had missed four of their last five.
And it was Oldham who instead struggled to score from 12 yards as Craig Davies' well-struck penalty - given for a foul by Demetriou on Rob Hunt - was superbly tipped over the crossbar by Shrimpers goalkeeper Mark Oxley on the stroke of half-time.
Southend doubled their lead in the 54th minute when a well-worked move resulted in Stephen McLaughlin delivering a left-wing cross which was volleyed home by Wright.
Latics should have got back into the game when top goalscorer Eoin Doyle sent a six-yard header wide of the right upright before he nodded another effort against the outside of the opposite post in the closing stages.
