Exeter made hard work of beating plucky Heybridge Swifts, but two Jayden Stockley goals helped them through to round two of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win at St James' Park.

Exeter missed three really good opportunities before Harrison Chatting fired high after 18 minutes with Heybridge's first attempt at goal, while Jake Taylor dragged a shot wide for Exeter.

Exeter faded as the first half went on, but the Swifts grew in confidence and ended strongly.

Stockley had a shot cleared off the line in the 53rd minute, but the striker broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he ghosted in at the near post to head Lloyd James' corner into the net.

Stockley then made it 2-0 after 64 minutes when a Lee Holmes corner evaded everyone and Exeter's record signing guided the ball home from 10 yards to double the Grecians' lead.

Heybridge pulled a goal back after 71 minutes when Samuel Bantick turned in a header back across goal by Lewis Godbold.

Any hopes of a comeback were ended by substitute Liam McAlinden in the 86th minute, when his fierce shot caught out Danny Sambridge at the near post and the ball squeezed through the goalkeeper's legs and crossed the line.
