Raith's unbeaten start to the Scottish League One season ended with a 2-1 defeat at Albion.
Goals in either half from Alan Trouten and Conner Shields moved Albion up to third.
Substitute Greig Spence pulled one back for Raith three minutes from time but the leaders' eight-match winning run in all competitions was halted.
Ayr cut Raith's lead at the top to three points courtesy of a 3-0 victory over 10-man East Fife.
Lawrence Shankland's fifth goal of the season put Ayr ahead in the seventh minute before Andy Geggan and Christopher Higgins netted after the interval, either side of Jonathan Page's sending-off for the visitors.
Arbroath are down to fourth following a 1-1 draw with Alloa.
After Scott Taggett missed a 17th-minute penalty for Alloa, the visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when David Gold fired into his own goal.
But the hosts secured a point as Ryan McCord netted from the penalty spot 11 minutes after half-time.
Daniel Stoney netted a last-minute equaliser to prevent Forfar from moving off the bottom of the table.
The hosts were leapfrogging Queen's Park heading into the dying seconds following Josh Peters' fourth-minute strike.
But they were denied only their second win of the season when Stoney scored to secure a 1-1 draw.
Queen's Park remain second bottom following a 4-2 defeat at Airdrie.
Scott Stewart put Airdrie in front after seven minutes before Dominic Docherty equalised shortly after.
Airdrie turned the screw in 21 second-half-minutes as Dean Cairns, Stewart and Willis Furtado fired them out of sight, meaning Docherty's second was nothing more than a consolation.
