Josh Morris' superbly executed free-kick four minutes from time earned Scunthorpe a 1-0 victory at Bury.
Morris curled home from 20 yards after he had been fouled by Bury debutant Rohan Ince.
Bury came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first period as the woodwork came to Scunthorpe's rescue after 21 minutes when Jermaine Beckford's shot hit a post after he raced in to meet Ryan Lowe's cross.
The Iron responded with Levi Sutton firing an effort into the side-netting.
Shortly before the interval Hakeeb Adelakun's strike from a tight angle was superbly saved by Bury keeper Joe Murphy.
Adelakun fired a free-kick into the Bury net after 51 minutes, but his effort was ruled out following a foul on Murphy.
Bury debutant Josh Laurent came close to a breakthrough when his shot was well saved by Matt Gilks.
At the other end, Scunthorpe sub and debutant Lee Novak almost scored with his first touch as he headed into the side-netting.
Morris settled the issue with his free-kick in the closing stages and Scunthorpe sub Kevin van Veen almost made it 2-0 two minutes from the end.
