The 6'4" Serbian midfielder will cost £40million from Mourinho's former club and join Romelu Lukaku and defender Victor Lindelof as United's summer signings to date.
Matic is understood to have had a medical earlier today and could even be available to feature in United's final friendly of the summer against Sampdoria in Dublin on Wednesday night.
Mourinho pressed ahead with Matic's signing after it became apparent he would be unable to buy Eric Dier from Tottenham this summer.
Juventus were also keen on buying a player who will turn 29 on Tuesday and Chelsea had hoped to drive Matic's fee closer to £50m.
But it is understood that United have won the fight for Matic with an offer considerably lower.
Mourinho can instantly recoup some of that investment by agreeing to sell Marouane Fellaini to Turkish side Galatasary, who spoke openly over the weekend about an offer for the Belgian international.
United insist they have yet to receive any bid for Fellaini but it is believed they would be happy to do so if they can recoup most of the £27.5m they paid Everton for the midfielder in 2013.

Galatasaray's sporting director Cenk Ergun claimed an agreement to sign Fellaini was almost done.
"We have a surprise name for a position. We have had talks with Marouane Fellaini," Ergun said.
"We need a player like Fellaini who can shuttle around in midfield. We have made an approach, we are close."
