Cameron James to be assessed ahead of Colchester's clash with Stevenage

Colchester will check on defender Cameron James before the Sky Bet League Two clash with Stevenage.

The 19-year-old was replaced at half-time of last weekend's 3-1 defeat at Notts County after taking a blow to the head from a close-range shot.

Midfielder Doug Loft (Achilles) hopes to be back in contention for the final few games as the U's chase a late push for the play-offs, but Sammie Szmodics is out after suffering a broken leg.

Leading scorer Kurtis Guthrie (ankle), midfielder Craig Slater (groin), defender Frankie Kent (ankle) and forward Denny Johnstone (knee) are all long-term absentees along with club captain Luke Prosser (knee).

Stevenage boss Darren Sarll could be without striker Ben Kennedy for the short trip east.

The forward was recalled last weekend but was forced off in the first half and is a doubt, with Josh McQuoid ready to step in.

Tom Pett scored the winner against Barnet having overcome a leg injury and is expected to retain his place, with Dean Wells pushing for a recall in defence.

Youngsters Ben Wilmot and Andronicos Georgiou have just signed their first professional deals but it is unlikely Sarll will call on them as he looks to keep Boro in the promotion race.
