Chelsea failed to sign Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery in 2008
The Blues tried to sweeten the move by chucking Jose Bosingwa into the deal.
But the Bundesliga giants rejected the £56.59m offer plus the Portuguese full-back.
Bayern's chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed the story in German outlet Sport Bild.
Jose Bosingwa was offered in exchange for Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery
The Bayern legend says not selling Ribery was a significant step for his club's progression in Europe.
When asked about Chelsea's failed Bosingwa plus cash offer, he said: "The offer we had for Franck Ribery in 2008 was almost unbelievable.
"However, the decision not to sell Franck Ribery was a milestone in the development of FC Bayern.
"That was the moment in the FC Bayern got to be a 'buying club'."
Ribery is still at Bayern now and has won six league titles and the Champions League in his time at the Allianz.
Bosingwa left Chelsea in 2012 and is now without a club after leaving Trabzonspor last year.
