Juventus increased their lead at the top of the Serie A standings, while Napoli thrashed Cagliari in a bumper afternoon of action in the Italian top-flight.

Serie A: Sunday afternoon wrap

Despite being dominant for much of their match against Torino at Stadio Olimpico di Torino, Juventus were shocked to find themselves behind in the 16th minute via a crisp Andrea Belotti strike.

However, they kept their composure and slowly fought their way back into the game, drawing level through Gonzalo Higuain in the 28th minute before the Argentina international completed his brace to put Juve ahead for the first time in the match in the 82nd minute.

To add insult to injury for the home side, Miralem Pjanic made it 3-1 two minutes into second half injury time to secure the points for the Serie A pace-setters.

Elsewhere goals from Valter Birsa (14') and Sergio Pellissier (49') were enough to hand Chievo a comfortable 2-0 win over Palermo at Stadio Renzo Barbera, while Bologna and Empoli played out to a dull 0-0 draw at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

Atalanta will be struggling to believe they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Udinese at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia after generating more than three times as many shots as the visitors.

In fact, Udinese only had three shots on target all game with all of them providing goals.

Duvan Zapata opened the scoring for the visitors against the run of play with virtually the last kick of the first half before Jasmin Kurtic restored parity less than 120 seconds after the restart.

After equalising there was a feeling Atalanta would be able to kick on and claim a victory, but it went completely the other way as Seko Fofana made it 2-1 in the 72nd minute before Cyril Thereau completed the scoring with three minutes left on the clock.

In the day's early match Napoli hammered Cagliari 5-0 at Stadio Sant'Elia led by a stunning hat-trick from Dries Mertens.

The Belgium international open the scoring after 34 minutes before Marek Hamsik made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time.

They continued apace after the break with Piotr Zielinski making it 3-0 in the 51st minute before Mertens added two more in the 69th and 72nd minutes to complete his hat-trick and the scoring to secure an easy three points for the visitors.

Serie A Sunday afternoon results:

Cagliari 0-5 Napoli
Atalanta 1-3 Udinese
Bologna 0-0 Empoli
Palermo 0-2 Chievo
Torino 1-3 Juventus
