Match Summary:

A two-goal blitz in three minutes gave Burnley an early lead through strikes from Jeff Hendrick and James Ward-Prowse, despite Bournemouth dominating the possession stakes. Eddie Howe's side were rewarded for their patience and quality build-up play, however, when Benick Afobe netted on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors threw numbers forward in search of goals, but struggled to penetrate a stubborn Burnley defence. Their willingness to attack would prove to be their downfall as George Boyd expertly netted from a counter-attack to put the result beyond any doubt. Charlie Daniels netted a late stunning consolation goal for the Cherries.

Full Report:

The game got off to a lively start with the visitors squandering two glorious opportunities in the opening ten minutes to break the deadlock after attempts by Dan Gosling and Benik Afobe respectively.

But the home side took the lead against the run of play in the 13th minute, when a long-ball by Tom Heaton was flicked on by Sam Voakes, which resulted in Hendrick hitting in an audacious 25-yard half-volley.

Things soon turned from bad-to-worse for Sunderland when Sean Dyche's side doubled their advantage courtesy of Stephen Ward, after he reacted quickest to a goalmouth scramble in the 15th minute.

Burnley saw much less of the ball than their counterparts for the majority of the first-half, but looked the more dangerous when attacking with their long-ball strategy.

Howe's side threw numbers forward in search of the equaliser and often got behind the Clarets defence, but were denied by quality goalkeeping from Heaton.

The home-side were rewarded for their patience and quality football when a well-worked move resulted in Afobe finding the back of the net on the cusp of half-time, which infuriated the Burnley manager.

Bournemouth came out in the second-half with a clear attacking intent, but were left frustrated by Burnley's deep-defensive line which was marshaled by Michael Keane.

The home side looked to shut up shop with quarter of an hour left on the clock, which forced the visitors to throw numbers forward in attack, which in turn left them exposed at the back.

And Burnley took advantage when they netted their third goal from a counter-attack, which George Boyd expertly converted in the 75th minute.

Another well-worked move from the visitors resulted in a consolation goal in the 91st minute of the tie through Charlie Daniels.

The Clarets were content on keeping possession for the remanding minutes of the encounter to register their first league victory in three games and move away from the relegation zone.
