Gareth Southgate is expected to take over the England team full time

Southgate has signed a £1.5m-a-year contract to take the job on a permanent basis until after the 2020 European Championships.

The 46-year-old had wanted financial parity with predecessors Sam Allardyce and Roy Hodgson, who were on £2.5m a year.

But he has agreed to a smaller basic salary on the basis that the deal includes lucrative performance-related bonuses should England do well.

There will also be no break clause in his contract so he will be entitled to full compensation if he is sacked after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Southgate was the only real candidate for the job and his contract represents a big pay rise on the £500,000-a-year he was earning as England Under-21 boss.

He is expected to bring Chelsea No.2 Steve Holland with him as assistant manager, with further talks planned over the rest of his backroom staff.

The FA will ratify the former Middlesbrough manager’s appointment at a board meeting today ahead of his official unveiling later this week.

Southgate has been in interim charge since replacing Allardyce in September and initially insisted he was not ready to do the job full time.

But he changed his mind after an unbeaten four-match run as temporary boss including two wins and two draws.

The former Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa defender was interviewed by a five-man panel at St George’s Park last Monday.

Gareth Southgate will keep Wayne Rooney as his captain

But his appointment was never in doubt and he will now concentrate on helping England qualify for the 2018 finals. They are currently top of Group F.

As Starsport told you last week he plans to keep Wayne Rooney as captain despite the Manchester United striker being pictured drunk at a wedding in the team hotel, while on international duty.

Aidy Boothroyd is favourite to succeed him as Under-21 boss after stepping up from the Under-20s following Southgate’s promotion.

Boothroyd won his two games in charge to help them qualify for Euro 2017 in Poland, and will be present at the draw for the finals in Krakow tomorrow.
